Creating a Financial Plan for Your Creative Home Business: Key Aspects and Tips

Whether you are operating a Baby Life Casting Business, a Pet Keepsake Business, a Silver Jewelry Business, or any other type of Craft Business. Business Planning must include, planning and tightly managing your Business’s financial performance.

Financial Planning helps you to determine your short and long-term financial goals and create a balanced plan to meet those goals. Creating a budgeting process is the most effective way to keep your business and its finances on track. But, this is just one of the elements you will need to incorporate into your financial planning.

Key Aspects of a Financial Plan

Financial Planning should incorporate:

• Balance Sheets - Your balance sheet is a fundamental statement at a given point in time. It provides a snapshot summary of what your business owns (i.e. assets) or is owed (liabilities) at a particular date.
• Budgeting and Business Planning - It's essential to plan and tightly manage your Business’s financial performance. Creating a budgeting process is the most effective way to keep your business and its finances on track.
• Financial & Management Accounts - As the Business owner, it’s your responsibility to make sure your business keeps accurate records and accounts. You will need to set up a basic record-keeping system.
• Set up a Record Keeping System - There are four basic sets of financial records that will help you run a tight Business. (The Cash Book, the Sales Ledger, the Purchase Ledger, and the Wages Book). Your records should include all receipts and expenditures and all goods purchased and sold. The Law states that all business owners must keep financial records and retain them for six years.
• Profit & Loss Account - This is a summary of business transactions, for a given period (normally 12 months). By deducting total expenditure from total income, it shows the ‘bottom line’. This shows whether your business made a profit or loss at the end of that financial period.
• Cash flow Management - This is the primary indicator of business health. While a business can survive short-term without sales or profits, without cash it will die. For this reason the inflow and outflow of cash needs careful monitoring and management.

Personally, I tend to hand over all of the financial planning and accounting aspects of my Business to my Accountant, as this provides me with good accountability and helps me to stay on track. A good accountant is generally worth their weight in gold.
