How to Make Jewellery with Metal Clay: Tools, Equipment, and Kiln Firing

I've just filmed this quick video in response to questions that are coming in from my Time & Freedom Webinar, about starting your own Silver Clay Jewellery Business.

This question comes from Stephanie, who is interested in starting her own Keepsake Jewellery Business, making Fingerprint Jewellery, Artwork Jewellery and Handprint Jewellery.  Stephanie, said that she's watched my FREE Mini Course, which she found really helpful.  She's keen to get started, but would like to know what Tools and Equipment she would need to start a Silver Clay Business.  I hope that my answer to this question is therefore, not only helpful to you Stephanie, but also anyone else who is considering starting their own Silver Clay Business or Keepsake Jewellery Business.

How do you Fire Metal Clay at Home?

In terms of how do you fire metal clay at home and what kind of kiln you need for metal clay, here are my suggestions.

First of all, I am often asked, how to fire metal clay without a kiln.  If you would like a detailed answer to this, I recommend that you read this article, in which I outline how to fire silver clay, both with and without a Kiln. Although, it is possible for you to fire metal clay without a Kiln, for instance, with a blow-torch or on a Gas Hob, I don't recommend it. The reason for this, is because there is much more room for error, when manually firing as opposed to Kiln Firing Silver Clay, as I explain in this article; "Do I need a Kiln to make Fingerprint Jewellery?"

The benefit of Kiln Firing Silver Clay, is that you will know that the Metal Clay is fully sintered and fired.  When Kiln firing, so long as  you have followed the instructions provided on our Metal Clay Jewellery Courses, you can be 100% certain that you have fired your Metal Clay Jewellery, at the right temperature, for the right amount of time and that it has fully sintered to solid silver.  Whereas, if you fire metal clay without a kiln, there is much more room for error.  Your Metal Clay Jewellery may not be fired properly., resulting in soft, fragile silver and unhappy customers.  That is not a positon that anyody wants to be in, when starting a Silver  Keepsake Jewellery Business, which is why I always recommend Kiln firing Silver Clay.

What Kind of Kiln do I need for Metal Clay?

The type of Kiln that you will need for Metal Clay, is very small and inexpensive.  In fact, it is smaller than a microwave, so won't take up much room in your home and can easily be used on your kitchen worktop or kitchen table. This therefore, makes starting a Keepsake Jewellery Business, the perfect business for mums that won't to stay home and make money around their famiily.

Here is a link to the Kiln that I recommend you will need, to make Metal Clay Jewellery.  I have negotatied special deals and discounts, directly with the Kiln manufacturers and wholesalers, meaning that this is an extremely cost-effective kiln to start your Keepsake Jewellery Business.
